Orthodontic Treatment For Adults In Erie & Corry, PA

More often than not, orthodontic treatments are associated with children and teens, not with adults. Although it is recommended that children visit the orthodontist by age 7, treatment later in life is certainly not out of the question. Whether you require treatment due to injury or wish to correct a bad bite that developed in childhood, Doleski and Wolford Orthodontics is happy to help.

What You Need To Know Before Treatment

Adult orthodontic treatment.Although healthy teeth can be moved into their appropriate position at any age, there are a couple of things we must consider prior to treatment. First, the jaw bone in an adult is fully developed and therefore cannot be changed withan orthodontic appliance like it would for a child.

Second, the adult patient must be free of periodontal disease before any pressure is applied to the teeth. If gum disease is present, treatment cannot ensue without risking bone loss and long-term prognosis of your teeth.

To maintain healthy teeth and gums, it is imperative to brush and floss on a regular basis in addition to visits with your dentist every 6 months.

What Types Of Orthodontic Appliances Can Adults Use?

The orthodontic appliances that are used for children and teens may be used for adults. For further information on these, we invite you to take a look at our Types of Braces page. Generally, adults prefer braces or aligners that are not visible to others. Luckily, we offer several solutions for this, including clear braces, lingual braces and Invisalign Clear Aligners
