How to Have a Braces-Friendly Halloween

At Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics, we strive to be your premier choice when you’re looking for an Erie, PA orthodontist. Along with providing high quality orthodontic treatments such as braces and Invisalign, we also aim to be your source for orthodontic advice and knowledge throughout the entire treatment process. As Halloween is coming up, this brings a new set of challenges for those who normally enjoy the finer parts of the holiday – namely, the candy!  Here are Dr. Doleski and Dr. Wolford’s tips on how to get through Halloween without causing any damage to your braces.

Healthy Halloween Tips From Your Corry Orthodontist

Avoid Hard Candy

When you wear braces, you’ll have to avoid hard food as that can break the wire or brackets of your braces. This means that many hard candies, including those with peanuts, like Snickers and Payday, are off-limits for the time being while you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Skip the Sticky Stuff Too

In addition to forgoing any hard candy, you’ll have to scratch the sticky candy as well. Food that’s sticky can get caught in your braces and loosen or pull off the wire or brackets. Some of the types of candy you’ll have to watch out for include Starburst, caramel, taffy, and Tootsie Rolls.

Not All Candy is Bad Though!

While the last two pieces of advice may have been heartbreaking for some of those with braces, we want to remind you that not all candy needs to be avoided. After all, what would Halloween be without at least a little candy? Just make sure to keep things in moderation and avoid candy that’s either hard or sticky. A few of the suitable treats for you this Halloween are plain Hershey’s bars, Reese’s cups, and Three Musketeers bars.

Don’t Forget Your Oral Hygiene Routine

Because there’s such an emphasis on candy and sweet treats during this time of the year, it’s even more important for you to give a committed effort in maintaining your oral hygiene. Make sure to brush a minimum of two times a day, but preferably once after every meal and before bed. Make sure to floss as well to keep food particles from getting trapped in your braces.
