Braces Friendly Halloween Treats

Halloween is the long-awaited time of the year where we can enjoy a variety of candy in droves. Whether you’re staying in, going out, dressing up, or watching scary movies, candy is an inevitability of the season. However, this can be troublesome if you have braces. It goes without saying that candy and dental hygiene are natural enemies but that doesn’t have to mean that you can’t enjoy the Halloween season. In fact, there’s a multitude of sweets you can enjoy (in moderation) without having to worry about a thing, and Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics is here to help guide you through what you need to know this Halloween!

What To Avoid

First things first, the best way to know what you can enjoy, is to understand what you should avoid. Often, a good general rule of thumb is to avoid anything sticky or hard candies you may bite down on. This does limit your options a little, but never fear, stay away from these candies and you’ll be okay.

Candies to avoid would be

  • Sticky candy: Starbursts, toffee, Tootsie Rolls
  • Hard Candy: Lollipops, Jolly Ranchers
  • Taffy
  • Caramel
  • Gummies
  • Gum
  • Caramel apples
  • Skittles
  • M&Ms

Safe Candies

Now to the good part, what you can eat! These are candies that are 100% braces-safe and fortunately some of the best types of candy! What you want to look for when determining if a candy is safe for braces are things that are generally soft or easy on the teeth. If it’s not too difficult to bite into it, or you don’t have to bite at all, then you’re in the green! Here are some examples of the types of candies you can enjoy this Halloween!

  • Solid chocolate: Milk, white, dark; take your pick!
  • Nougat-filled candy: Three Musketeers
  • Powdery candy: Sweet Tarts, Pixie Stix
  • Minty candy
  • Malted milk balls
  • Soft cookies
  • Peanut butter crackers
