At Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics, our orthodontists and talented staff are not only specialized in braces and Invisalign for children, teens, and adults, but are also able to spot more complicated orthodontic problems that may call orthodontic surgery. We work in conjunction with talented oral surgeons who perform orthodontic surgeries to better serve the communities of Erie, Lawrence Park, Corry, and surrounding areas in Pennsylvania with the best quality orthodontic care.

What Is Orthodontic Surgery?

Orthodontic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery, is a procedure that corrects abnormalities of the jaws and teeth. Most patients will find themselves going to the orthodontist to straighten their teeth or enhance their bite, but a handful of patients have to correct their bite by aligning their jaw properly. While we do not perform these surgeries at our practice, Dr. Doleski and Dr. Wolford can refer you to the best oral surgeon for the procedure. Upon undergoing surgery, patients will notice both a dramatic improvement in their appearance as well as the function of their jaws and teeth.

Who Needs Orthodontic Surgery?

Our jaws are separated into upper and lower pieces, and these pieces don’t always grow at the same time, leading to a discrepancy in size and function. Patients who have misaligned jaws may find themselves having trouble with chewing, talking, sleeping, breathing, and other daily activities. If you have one of the following characteristics, you may be a candidate for orthodontic surgery:

  • Prognathism - when your lower jaw protrudes forward because it is too big
  • Micrognathia - when your lower jaw is too small
  • Asymmetry - when your lower jaw is crooked
  • Maxillary procumbency - when your upper jaw is too big
  • Maxillary/midface deficiency - when your upper jaw is too small
  • Apertognathia/open bite - when you cannot close your teeth together

Doleski & Wolford Orthodontics can provide all the necessary orthodontic care needed as part of a complete treatment plan that would also include orthodontic surgery to correct jaw problems.
